PFM
PAST and PRESENT

The
PFM Group has been working in the
packaging business for more than 40 years
and has strengthened its presence in the
industry thanks to its continuous research,
the use of top level instrumentation and
designers and the constant desire to improve
and innovate its technology and knowledge of
the industry.
The creation of new offices and acquisition
of other companies have contributed towards
completing the range of products and
accessories dedicated by PFM to the
industry.
Today PFM is an industrial group made up of
7 companies: the Italian head office, PFM
Packaging Machinery, is joined by the
British company, PFM LTD and the
Canadian company, PFM Corporation USA &
Canada; then there is the newly acquired
BG PACK SPA, which has consolidated
the Group's presence in the market of
ergonomic and resealable packaging and last
in order of acquisition, MBP, a
company in Mantua producing multi-headed,
linear weighing machines, which complete the
wide range of PFM machines dedicated to
vertical packaging, SPS ITALIANA PACK
SYSTEMS Electronic horizontal wrapping
machines at low, medium and high speed for
single product, multipack and for bakery
industrys.
The production range is made up of around
40 models divided into flow wrap and fill,
form seal packaging machines, various
automatic feed systems, an infinite range of
accessories for specific operations and for
customisation of machines and lines as well
as a complete series of linear and
multi-headed weighing machines.
The commercial network covers over 75
countries; there are hundreds of products
that may be packaged; 250 specialised
operators that take care of every aspect,
from designing to production, sale and
service.
-
1964: The
Italianapack company is
created for the production
of horizontal flow wrap
packaging machines.
-
May 20, 1969: the
Fioravanti Pietro & C. SNC
company is created; it is
located in the same plant as
the future PFM.
-
1972: Italianapack is
sold to the American group
FMC. Fioravanti Pietro & C.
SNC officially changes its
name to PFM di Pietro
Fioravanti SNC.
-
1973: PFM works
mainly for Italianapack,
recently sold by the
Fioravanti family to the
American group FMC.
Production is concentrated
on steelwork for the
Mignonetta (historic
Italianapack packaging
machine).
-
1971 to 1974: at that
time overhauls of used
machines were also carried
out, along with machine
tooling work for third
parties.
-
In the first months of
1974 forced air rotary
ovens for the baking of
bread and sweets are
enjoying great success:
these systems will soon take
the place of traditional
tunnel ovens. Pietro
Fioravanti decides to launch
the production of these new
ovens and their relative
rising units.
-
1977 their mass
production is underway, the
prototype of the
heat-shrinking machine is
ready: the SUPER COMPACT.
-
In the second half of
1979, the CC150 is born,
the first small flow pack
packaging machine which
immediately enjoys success
on the market. PFM grows and
work.
-
1980 the CC150 is
improved, and a new
packaging machine is
designed: the PFM 80 SUPER
in Standard and Oversize. At
the same time the production
of rotary ovens and
heat-shrinking machines
continues.
-
1981: Through
collaboration with Gewiss of
Bergamo, a long-time PFM
client, the SC 81 was
created.
-
From 1981 to 1982 ,
Gewiss purchases 24 of the
machines, which are still
operating today.
-
In 1981, the first
prototype of the PFM 2000 is
created. The deceleration
mechanism designed for this
machine is still used by our
PFM 2300. The production of
ovens diminishes while
flow-pack machines start to
take off, a clear sign which
points to the future
orientation of the company
and its investments.
-
1983 PFM was
preparing for the explosion
of the market for mozzarella
packaging systems. The SC83
heat-shrinking machine is
built, the SC81 is modified,
and small heat-shrinking
ovens are built.
-
1984 saw the launch
of PFM in the USA, where the
first PFM 2000 is sold to
SFK. However, this packaging
machine does not seem to
fully satisfy the needs of
the US market: thus, in
collaboration with the
client, the PFM 2500 is
born. The next big objective
is now mozzarella due to the
new law in force regarding
its packaging.
-
1985 is synonymous
with mozzarella packaging
machines. permit PFM to
seize the market, and it is
an important market,
significantly indicating the
future of the company. The
Canadian market is also at
the starting blocks, and a
total of 8 more machines are
produced for that country.
-
1986, the turning
point for PFM. The
dedication of everyone at
every level permits us to
build reliable machines on a
rapid schedule; The PFM 200
INOX, the 2500 INOX and the
2500 BB are also created.
-
In 1987, PFM, through
Pack Valley, concentrates
its efforts on the sector of
vertical packaging machines
for mozzarellas packed with
preserving liquid. The PV
450 and the PV 400 are
created. That same year the
PFM 3000 is created, taking
the place of the PFM 2000
INOX. Also created are the
PFM 200, the Tornado LD and
LDBB and the Candy. The
Canadian and US markets are
growing, and a total of 25
machines are delivered to
those countries. Demand on
the part of the British
market brings about the
creation of PFM UK, while in
Germany, Delta Pack is
born.Production is by now
diversified into several
sectors, and the range of
machines, from the
horizontal and vertical
packaging machines, to
modified atmosphere
packaging to loading units,
permit PFM to grow daily
becoming more and more
competitive.
-
1988: The little PFM
80 needs reworking to
improve versatility and to
lower costs: in 1988, the
PFM 30 takes its place. The
PV 550 is designed and built
(later to become the PV
260), and the SC 88 is
created as well 1989 is a
transition year: no new
machines are built, those
already in production are
perfected, and the PFM 80,
the Supercompact, the ovens
and the LVA are eliminated.
-
In 1990, the machine
tooling department is
created, and new machines
are purchased, including a
numerical control centre and
a numerically controlled
lathe.
-
The nineties are
frenetic years for PFM, yet
rich with satisfaction. The
range of machines is further
increased with the creation
of the Mistral, the Scirocco,
the Hurricane, the Blizzard,
the PV 260 LD and various
loading systems. Many
technological components and
machine accessories are
redesigned and improved.
-
In 2001 PFM acquired
the majority of shares in
the company BG PACK
in Bergamo, thereby
achieving leadership in
Europe in cheese wrapping.
BG Pack is specialised in
the production of packaging
machines for resealable
packages.
The PFM technical department
designed Shamal, and
introduced Unibag and
Pocket Bag packages
onto the markets.
-
In April 2002 PFM
obtained UNI EN ISO
9001-2000 (Vision 2000) for
its Italian head office.
This important result goes
alongside other prestigious
acknowledgements obtained by
the PFM Group over the last
few years: the Oscar of
packaging in 1997 and 1999,
awarded to BG PACK and
Certificate of merit for
Customer Service awarded to
PFM Ltd by PPMA (a
British organisation that
presides over the top
companies in the packaging
industry).
-
In August 2002, PFM
acquired the majority of
shares in the company MBP
in Mantua, which
manufactures multi-headed
and linear weighing machines
and vertical packaging
machines. PFM has now
completed its wide range of
machines dedicated to the
packaging of powdered and
granular products.
-
In September 2003
PFM acquired the 100% of
shares in the company SPS
Sasib Packagin Systems.
